The SINFO Olive Tree, RECOMED Award for the Best Monumental Olive Tree in the Mediterranean

In 2019, Recomed organized the 1st Mediterranean Contest of the Best Monumental Olive Tree. Among 12 specimens from 6 countries which were presented, a prestigious jury, formed by experts in agronomy, chose the SINFO OLIVE TREE located in Traiguera (Castellón) as a winner, in an area declared by FAO as GIAHS of Monumental Olive Trees of the Sénia Territory. Due to the Covid pandemic, the award ceremony had been delayed but has finally taken place on 21 June 2024.

Begoña García Bernal, Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food, presided over the ceremony that took place in the Townhall of Traiguera, accompanied by Lola Amo Camino, Vice-President of Recomed and President of AEMO, together with the Presidents of the Mancomunidad Taula del Sénia and the Territorio Sénia Association, the Mayor of Traiguera and the Deputy Delegate of the goverment in Castellón.

Due to the physical impossibility of the owner of the olive tree, José Manuel Alemany, the award has been received by Amador Peset, the caretaker of the tree since many years, who expressed his gratitude on behalf of the owner’s family and himself for this prestigious recognition, saying that the prize is largely shared by all the people who over 20 centuries have been responsible for this truly unique olive tree that has survived until our days and hopefully can continue to bear fruit for many years to come.

Following the official ceremony, the attendees went to the farm where this unique specimen is located, to admire it and take photographs as a souvenir of such a memorable day.
