Over a career lasting roughly a decade, beginning when he was 27 years old, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, including approximately 860 oil paintings, more than 1,000 drawings and countless sketches.<\/p><section class=\"quote-box callout cf\"><q class=\"quote\">For Van Gogh, the olive tree was imbued with a deeply personal, consolatory symbolism.<\/q><span class=\"quote-author\">\u2013 Nienke Bakker,\u00a0Curator, Van Gogh Museum<\/span><\/section><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among his paintings \u2014 including the celebrated <em>Sunflowers<\/em>, <em>The Starry Night<\/em>, <em>The Bedroom<\/em>, <em>The Potato Eaters<\/em>, <em>Wheatfield with Cypresses<\/em>, <em>Almond Blossom<\/em> and numerous self-portraits \u2014 is a remarkable series devoted to olive trees.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van Gogh created the works during the final years of his life, an exceptionally prolific phase of his artistic journey, while living in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveoiltimes.com\/topic\/provence\">Provence<\/a>, in southern France.<\/p><figure class=\"full-width\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveoiltimes.com\/media\/2026\/09\/v5.jpg\" alt=\"Vincent van Gogh, Olive Trees on a Hillside, 1889, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)\"  loading=\"eager\"\/><figcaption><h4>Vincent van Gogh, <em>Olive Trees on a Hillside<\/em>, 1889, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)<\/h4><\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May 1889, after spending 15 months in Arles, Van Gogh voluntarily entered the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-R\u00e9my-de-Provence following a mental health crisis.
